Sr. Consultant, Internet Business Consulting (Site Management)

This position is part of the Digital COE Build Organization Digital Intake and Site Management team. Duties include working with Marketing and business partners to ensure all new requests impacting assigned digital properties align with enterprise objectives and have a corresponding measurement plan; and communicate and present website metrics and measures to leaders. This role will help guide and influence digital work requests and website(s) improvement. This role will assist with the planning, defining and implementing of website changes and optimization improvements.

Key responsibilities:

  • Continuously evaluate customer research, digital best practices, and competitor data to help guide and influence digital work requests and website improvements.

  • Review, facilitate, approve, monitor, and/or report on assigned digital property metrics and work requests

  • Facilitate open forums with Digital COE and business unit leaders to continually evaluate site management processes and deliverables for improvement

  • Work with business units and Marketing partners to monitor and optimize traffic, sales, and self-service via the website

  • Provide inputs into test and learn project team for projects impacting assigned digital properties

  • Monitor and help prioritize maintenance activities for assigned digital properties

  • Investigate, facilitate and determine the best resolution of any business/operational/technical issues arising from Digital Delivery owned digital properties

Owns with no oversight. Very independent and self-driven and provides oversight at the Program level. Has developed subject matter expertise in one or more digital products or services. Nationwide Financial lines of business experience is a strong plus.

JOB SUMMARY: Serves as the highest level subject matter expert. Leads enterprise-wide project teams, functions, and activities associated with the operation, control and monitoring of sales-oriented internet applications (quote/bind and servicing). Collaborates with senior business leaders, large project teams, senior IT leaders, etc. Coordinates internal and external resources to configure quote/bind and servicing applications to meet enterprise-wide strategic internet sales objectives. Provides strategic input towards the strategy, production, operation, and delivery of all sales-oriented internet activities, applications and products. May specialize in one or more eCommerce roles such as product management (management of existing applications), new application development (plan/build/run), or other specializations as the Internet & Customer Solutions department grows. Participates in testing and business readiness exercises as part of overall quality control prior rollout of new and/or enhanced internet applications.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: Reports to the AVP/VP level. DIRECT REPORTS: This is an individual contributor but may manage 1-3 direct reports. May also be responsible for virtual and project teams.


  1. As the highest level subject matter expert, provides direction to project teams and/or product groups for enterprise wide sales-oriented internet application projects. Defines internet application scope and objectives based on user needs and understanding of applicable internet technologies. Provides consulting to senior leadership and leads business process analysis and needs assessments, aligning solutions with business goals and initiatives.

  2. Develops business requirements based on strategic enterprise needs; collaborates with content writers, application designers, coders, and business representatives to conceptualize internet application goals. Ensures and communicates project alignment with strategic and organizational goals to the project dependency areas, executive leadership and identified stakeholders.

  3. Identifies opportunities for leveraging the website in pursuit of strategic internet sales objectives including cross-promotion of new products. Assists in leading future web strategy & planning across Direct & Customer Solutions. Also partners with other business units to determine cross-organizational impacts of their roadmaps and works toward alignment. Directs the coordination, prioritization of entire Direct & Customer Solutions funding request to Business Transformation Center with executive level presentations to support requests.

  4. Provides expert consultation in identifying and executing strategic partnerships to acquire content, features, and online tools that support the internetsite strategy. Assists with overall strategy development and provides a broad range of ideas and/or metrics regarding process design, implementation, support, and operation initiatives. Directs the evaluation of new internet process and project initiatives for internet viability.

  5. Leads the tracking and analyzing of site traffic to understand customers' usage patterns and trends and assess ongoing competitive analysis of high-speed internetsites, content and emerging technologies to continually inform the content strategy and foresee new trends. Monitors current results and provides scorecard data to measure success of current activities and to highlight any major production issues.

  6. May manage a variety of collaborative relationships with business leaders, project leaders, vendors, etc. Manages service evaluations regarding a variety of outside consulting service vendors.

  7. Acts as a source of internetsite expertise for direction, mentoring, and guidance for less experienced staff. Sought as a resource for resolution of the most complex internet design, implementation, support, and operational problems.

  8. Acts as a source of expertise in one or more internet functions: internet product, architect, usability, e-commerce marketing, etc. Consults on usability testing, system compatibility, troubleshooting and updates on-line applications.

  9. Participates in testing and business readiness exercises as part of overall quality control prior rollout of new and/or enhanced internet applications.

  10. Oversees the analysis and alignment of business requirements with the organization's internet infrastructure components including process design, product delivery, organizational functions and overall business structure. Develops and provides recommendations on possible process, tool, and control enhancements to increase the quality and optimization of internet processes and applications.

  11. Upon approval of business case, leads the definition of new internet process and project requirements, creation of supporting documentation, and training for internet processes or projects.

  12. Performs other duties as assigned.


Education: Undergraduate studies in business administration, marketing, human-computer interaction, psychology, or related field. Advanced degree preferred.

License/Certification/Designation: Property/Casualty insurance and/or Life/Health/Accident/Variable Annuities licensing and/or FINRA 6 & 26 Securities registration, CLU, CPCU, CPU, FLMI certifications will be helpful.

Experience: Typically 10 or more years of professional and management experience in tinternet sales, web site or web application development and/or research. Management of large, complex projects required. Experience leading large, company-wide projects.

Knowledge: Expert knowledge of insurance products and services. Knowledge of Microsoft Windows Programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and LotusNotes. Expert knowledge of internet technologies and website management. Must have a strong understanding of customer business and product environment. Must have a working knowledge of the internet sales applications and all feeder and support systems.

Skills/Competencies: Must have the ability to manage large complex projects. Demonstrate ability to steer enterprise-wide change such as change in business model, restructuring operations, new technologies, mergers, major collaborations, etc. Must have strong project and process management skills. Must possess strong oral and written communication skills to interact with all levels within the company as well as external parties. Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills. Able to adapt to a fast paced environment. Experience in managing multiple work streams. Must have strong problem-solving and decision-making skills. Must be capable of negotiating and interacting with senior leadership, internal & external partners, & stakeholders.
